Want to teach your children to volunteer? Do your children love animals? Here are some volunteer opportunities that might be a perfect fit for your family. Please note parents are required to supervise children at all times. Make this a family opportunity, create memories and serve alongside your children!
Read to an Animal– Reading has been shown to help calm animals who have been rescued. Many animal shelters offer reading programs for children to come with a parent and read to a cat or dog. Some of the programs even offer incentives to encourage the children as they develop their reading skills. This program is offered at the shelters listed below. If these locations are not close to you, check with your local animal shelter to see if they offer a similar program.
Foster a Dog or Cat– Consider opening your home to a foster animal. This is great opportunity to teach your child about caring for animals and ongoing responsibilities for living creatures. Placements can be as short as a few days or last up to couple of months. This might be something fun to do during the summer when the kids are home from school! This could be a family opportunity but a parent will need to be responsible for the animal.
Feed the Horses & Help with Farm Chores– Volunteers of all ages can volunteer with Save The Horses. There are two farm locations in Cumming. Volunteers are needed for 2-3 hour shifts every day of the week!
Train a Service Dog– Canine Assistants in Milton is always looking for volunteers to take their puppies out for instructional training and socialization. Volunteers are assigned a puppy at 7 weeks and work with the same dog on a consistent basis until the dog reaches age 18 months-2 years. Training required. This could be a family volunteer opportunity but the adult will need to attend training and be responsible for the dog.
Make Blankets for Animals in a Shelter– Check with your local animal shelter to see if they need blankets or towels for the animals. Children can use old towels, blankets, clothing and scraps of fabric to make blankets for the animals.
Volunteer at an Animal Shelter– Contact your local animal shelter to see if they need volunteers to help with feeding, cleaning, walking the animals, or organizing supplies. Parents be prepared to stay with your children for the volunteer project and check with the shelter to make sure they allow children. Angels Among Us in Alpharetta allows children to volunteer with their parents.
Help Transport an Animal to Appointments– Many shelters are looking for volunteers to assist with transportation needs. Rescued animals need to be transported to and from vet visits. Children can assist their parents. Check with your local shelter for specific regulations and more details.
