10 Volunteer Opportunities in Metro Atlanta for Kids

Help meet critical needs in our community while cultivating a heart for others in your children. Here are some ideas to get your family out and serving around metro Atlanta.

Deliver MealsMeals on Wheels needs volunteers to deliver meals along a pre-determined route to seniors in your area. Routes are typically 1-1.5 hours and you can sign up weekly, monthly, or as needed.

Volunteer at a Food PantryFind a food pantry in your area. Check with the individual food pantry to find volunteer hours and details about age restrictions. If you can’t find a food pantry in your area that allows children to volunteer, consider organizing a food drive with your children and taking your children with you to drop the food off at the pantry. When you drop off the food from your food drive, many food pantries will give the children a tour of their facilities and talk with them about how their donations help people in need, but keep in mind many non-profits are understaffed and may not have the time to offer a tour.

Volunteer at a Children’s Hospital– Egleston and Scottish Rite offer an educational program called Young Friends for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Children will be given the chance to volunteer and learn about what goes on at Children’s.

Prepare Meals for Families in NeedMeals by Grace in Cumming offers a service project called Kids in the Kitchen for children under 12. Kids in the Kitchen takes place on Sunday afternoons twice a month. Children and their parents will learn about the needs in our community and will assist with tasks such as unloading the food truck, preparing boxes of food, assisting the chef, making cards, and delivering food. Volunteers are asked to contribute $10.

Pack Baby Items for Low-Income Families– Children as young as 5 (and younger siblings are welcome to play in the playroom) are encouraged to volunteer alongside a parent to help prepare diapers, wipes, and other baby items for families in need. 2 hour shifts are available M-F at Helping Mamas in Norcross.

Spend Time with Seniors– Visit one-on-one with a senior or assist with group activities such as BINGO, arts/crafts, holiday projects, games, and parties/socials. Check with a nursing home in your area to see if they offer volunteer opportunities. A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab in Marietta is looking for volunteers ages 5 and up to volunteer with their parents.

Feed the Homeless– Help serve breakfast, hand out blankets, hygiene kits, and clothing to the homeless. Agape Way meets volunteers at the corner of Joseph Lowery & Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway N in downtown Atlanta every Sunday morning, rain or shine, at 9AM. Volunteers are asked to bring bottled water, blankets/sleeping bags, hygiene kits, bagged lunches, shoes, clothing, etc. to distribute to those in need.

Plant a Tree– Volunteers of all ages are needed to help plant trees with Trees Atlanta. Projects take place on Saturdays from 9AM-12PM, typically October-March, in different neighborhoods throughout Atlanta.

Volunteer at an Event– There are nonprofit events and fundraisers throughout the year. Many of these volunteer opportunities are open to families. Your family might be asked to hand out water to runners at a fundraising race, serve food at a holiday event, or clean up after a distribution day. Act Together Ministries needs families to help serve lunch, distribute school supplies and assist with set up/clean up at our Tools 4 School event in July.

Volunteer in a Thrift Store– Many nonprofits have thrift stores to raise funds to support their mission. Often these thrift stores will allow children to volunteer alongside their parents. Volunteers may be asked to assist customers in the store, sort, inventory or stock donations. The Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell needs volunteers Monday-Saturday.
